you take away the sins of the world
have mercy on us
how many days I stared at you,
sprawled on a cross & bleeding,
railing at you for taking it
so amiably
furious that you just accepted
the sacrifice of your broken body
hurling my confusion at you,
bitter stones as if to an ancient adulteress:
“WHY did you do this?
WHY?
how COULD you?”
(how COULD I?)
& then the tears would flood
my heart, where something
threatening was stirring,
(something very much beyond
this cool, darkened church
with its French marble
& quaint family sepulchres)
something fragile, & sweet,
& agonizing
like destiny,
loaded heavy as a cross,
light as milkweed
& a throat choked up
with the terrible certainty
of your love.
